MANILA, December 26 ------ The Department of Health (DOH) reported 28 firecracker-related injuries as of Christmas Day.
The figure comes from data collected between December 21 and 4 a.m. on December 25, sourced from 62 sentinel hospitals nationwide that the DOH monitors for firecracker-related injuries during the holiday season. Most of the recorded cases involved younger individuals, the agency said. Nineteen of the cases were among those aged 19 and below, while the remaining involved individuals aged 20 and above.
The most common causes of injuries were firecrackers known as “5-star,” “boga” and “triangle,” all of which are prohibited under Philippine National Police regulations. Despite the incidents, the DOH noted that the number of firecracker-related injuries this year is significantly lower compared to the same period in 2024, when 56 cases were recorded. With the New Year approaching, when the use of firecrackers is expected to increase, the DOH urged the public to seek immediate medical attention in case of firecracker-related accidents.
The agency also reminded the public to call the national emergency hotline 911 for urgent medical assistance.
