DOH readies facilities, referral system as leptospirosis cases rise

MANILA, August 25 ------ The Department of Health (DOH) said it is tracking nationwide leptospirosis cases following heavy rains and flooding, activating 33 fast lanes and managing bed capacities to handle incoming patients.

In a statement, the DOH noted that the patients are across National Capital Region (NCR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). As of Aug. 22, DOH recorded 4,285 total cases nationwide. This figure represents a 37-percent drop compared to the 6,839 cases logged during the same period in 2025.

A recent increase showed 495 cases from July 26 to Aug. 8, reflecting a 29-percent surge from the 383 cases reported between July 12 and July 25. The NCR, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon recorded the highest case concentrations nationwide. The DOH warned of additional case increases due to the disease's five- to 15-day incubation period, urging individuals to seek medical consultation within 24 to 48 hours after flood exposure.

Admitted indigent patients are covered under the Zero Balance Billing Program in DOH hospitals, while PhilHealth benefit packages cover severe leptospirosis cases up to over PHP400,000.
