MANILA, Philippines, June 5 ------ The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded an increase of over 240 percent in dengue cases in Metro Manila in the first quarter of 2025. From Jan. 1 to April 5, the DOH-Metro Manila Center for Health Development registered 16,708 dengue cases. The figure is 242 percent higher compared to the same period in 2024, according to the DOH.

Forty-three deaths due to dengue were reported during the same period. “This accounts for a fatality rate of 0.26 percent,” the DOH said. With the onset of the rainy season, the DOH, in collaboration with the Department of Education and local government units, will launch integrated vector control activities to prevent the spread of dengue cases in public elementary schools in the National Capital Region. “This initiative is part of efforts to decrease dengue cases by eliminating potential breeding sites for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes,” the DOH said.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection. The symptoms include mild fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite and sense of taste, measles-like rash, nausea and vomiting.
