MANILA, March 31 ------ Luzon's power grid may fall under a "Yellow Alert" warning in the coming months due to El Niño's effects on hydroelectric power plants, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). "Based on the latest DOE simulations, with hydroelectric power plants running below capacity level due to the El Niño phenomenon, the Luzon grid might experience Yellow Alert in April and May while the Visayas and Mindanao grids will have normal reserve level during the second quarter of the year," DOE said in a statement.

With this, the department urged the public to practice energy conservation as the country prepares for the dry season. DOE added that it continues to monitor the Philippines' power situation to "ensure energy security, especially during the next three months when scorching temperatures are felt."

Meanwhile, the DOE also reminded power generation companies to comply with the DOE-approved operation and maintenance program to ensure meeting target operational dates. The dry season in the country has begun last Friday (March 22, 2024) and was announced by state weather bureau PAGASA.
