March 18 ------ KACEY Dela Rosa carried Gilas Pilipinas Women to their first and only win in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament, beating Colombia, 74-59 in Lyon-Villeurbanne, France.
Dela Rosa had 25 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks, in a monster performance as Gilas Women got a silver lining in its maiden World Cup qualifying tournament appearance by winning on the last day. Sumayah Sugapong also played a huge outing with 21 points to support Dela Rosa as the two went on an offensive onslaught in the second half.
Gilas Women outscored Colombia, 18-7, in the third quarter to begin the rout after trailing, 40-33, at the half. Dela Rosa scored all the points in a 6-2 stretch that got Gilas Women up, 64-51, in the fourth. The lead eventually ballooned to 17 on two free throws by Dela Rosa. Gilas Women atoned after losses to France, 115-66; Germany, 113-80; Nigeria, 101-84; and South Korea, 105-74, in the qualifying tournament.
