MANILA, Philippines, December 11 ------ The registered deaths and births in the country continued to post double-digit declines in the January to August period, while marriages rose compared to last year’s record, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.
Data from the PSA showed the preliminary number of registered deaths from January to August this year reached 366,918, or down by 34.6 percent from the 560,839 deaths in the same period last year. Recording the highest number of registered deaths by region for the period was Region 4-A or Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) with 54,533 or 14.9 percent of total deaths in the country.
The National Capital Region (NCR) registered 44,048 deaths for the same period, or 39.3 percent lower than the 72,585 deaths registered from January to August last year. Within NCR, Quezon City had the highest number of registered deaths with 9,569 or 21.7 percent of the total deaths in the region. Among provinces, Cavite recorded the highest number of registered deaths with 13,620 or 3.7 percent of total deaths in the country. “The top three causes of death in the country from January to August of 2022 were ischaemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and neoplasms,” PSA said, noting these were also the leading causes of death in the same period in 2021. The COVID-19 was also cited among the leading causes of death, accounting for 12,772 deaths or 3.5 percent of the total.
Deaths due to COVID-19 with virus identified or confirmed by a laboratory test reached 8,963 cases or 2.4 percent of total deaths, while deaths due to COVID-19 with virus not identified accounted for 3,809 or one percent of total. PSA said the reported number of deaths due to COVID-19 may differ from the one released by the Department of Health as the statistics agency’s figures were obtained from the certificates of death, particularly the descriptions written on the medical certificate portion as reviewed by the health officer of the local government unit concerned. DOH figures are based on its surveillance system.
In terms of registered births, the PSA said the number declined by 22.3 percent to 662,780 in the January to August period this year from 852,960 in the same period in 2021. Calabarzon recorded the highest number of registered births with 100,118 or 15.1 percent of total births in the country. NCR registered 81,170 births from January to August this year, or 19.4 percent lower than the 100,680 registered births for the same period last year. In NCR, Quezon City had the highest number of registered births at 16,501 or 20.3 percent of total births in the region. Cavite was the province with the highest number of registered births from January to August this year at 26,462 or four percent of total births in the country.
On the other hand, the preliminary number of registered marriages from January to August this year reached 256,854, up by 11.4 percent from the 230,590 in the same period in 2021. Calabarzon also had the highest number of registered marriages with 37,614 or 14.6 percent of total marriages in the country. Registered marriages in NCR reached 31,444 – a 27.4-percent increase from the 24,674 marriages in the same period last year. Within NCR, Quezon City recorded the highest number of registered marriages at 11,235 or 35.7 percent of total marriages in the region.
Batangas was the province with the most number of marriages at 9,485 or 3.7 percent share from January to August this year.
