Charo Santos dedicates MMFF win to Taclobeños, hopes film inspires typhoon Odette victims

December 29 ------ Charo Santos is beyond grateful after being named Best Actress in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Gabi ng Parangal 2021, and dedicated her win to residents of Tacloban City. The veteran actress, who won the award for her performance in the critically acclaimed “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon,” described her victory as a “very pleasant surprise,” as per her Instagram page yesterday, Dec. 27. “To MMFF, this is a very pleasant surprise in a challenging year where I have been in a roller coaster of emotions,” she admitted.

Santos also considers it a “privilege” to star in a film about Tacloban residents who were affected by super typhoon Yolanda eight years ago. “I would also like to dedicate this to all Taclobeños. I had the privilege to share your story around the world in my own little way,” she said. “Sana rin po ay maging inspirasyon ito sa ating mga kababayan na naapektuhan ng bagyong Odette.” Santos then encouraged the public to help those who fell victim to super typhoon Odette and to stay safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although Santos was unable to personally receive her trophy due to personal matters, she said she is honored to be recognized by the MMFF this year. She commended her co-stars Daniel Padilla and Rans Rifol, who received the special jury prize and the best supporting actress award, respectively. She also congratulated the producers, staff and director of “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” for their Second Best Picture win in the festival. “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” is directed by Carlo Francisco Manatad. It follows the story of a mother and son dealing with the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda that hit Tacloban and nearby provinces back in 2013. The movie won a special award at Locarno film festival in Switzerland last August.
