Carlos Yulo eyes elusive Asian Games gold in Japan

August 23 ------ CARLOS Yulo hopes to secure his first-ever Asian Games gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan next month.

The two-time Olympic champion will be in the men’s artistic gymnastics competition along with his younger brother Eldrew, Miguel Besana, Justine Ace De Leon, and Zachary Cortins Nunez, according to a Facebook post by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines.

Despite his impressive credentials that also includes 12 gold medals in the Asian Championships, Yulo has yet to win an Asian Games gold. In 2018, Yulo placed first in the qualification of the floor exercise, only to finish seventh in the final. He also missed a medal that year after finishing fourth in the vault in Jakarta.

Yulo skipped the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, China as he chose to compete in the World Championships in Belgium that coincided with the Asian Games. The Filipino gymnast is expected to be a favorite in winning the Asian Games floor exercise and vault golds being the reigning Olympic champion. He will look to win those medals in Japan where he once trained for several years when he was in the youth and his early times in the senior level under his former coach Munehiro Kugimiya.
