Cargo vessels caught in escalating strikes across Black Sea ports

October 6 ------ Commercial shipping in the Black Sea is once again facing mounting danger, as Russia intensifies strikes on cargo vessels and port infrastructure around Ukraine’s Odesa region.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, four dry cargo vessels were targeted in separate incidents involving Chornomorsk Port, the Bug Estuary and the wider northwestern Black Sea. The attacks also extended to logistics facilities in Chornomorsk, with further strikes reported overnight on October 5. Industrial and port infrastructure across the region was hit, triggering several fires that were later brought under control by emergency crews. No casualties were reported in those attacks.

Russia also said it had targeted the port of Vylkove, fuel storage facilities in Chornomorsk and additional cargo vessels operating in the area. The Defense Ministry claimed the vessels were carrying military equipment and supplies, but did not provide their names or other identifying details. The latest strikes came just days after a Liberian-flagged civilian cargo vessel was hit at a port in the Odesa region on October 3. The attack killed one motorman and injured three other crew members, while a further 13 seafarers were evacuated from the vessel.

The scale of the damage to Ukraine’s maritime sector has continued to grow since the start of the full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian government said last month that Russian attacks had damaged or partially destroyed 1,173 port infrastructure facilities and 274 civilian vessels. The latest attacks come only days after a much more direct reminder of the risks facing civilian crews.

For shipping companies and crews operating in the region, the incidents underscore an increasingly difficult reality: the boundaries between military targets and commercial maritime activity are becoming harder to navigate. For seafarers, the danger is no longer confined to the open water. Ports, cargo terminals and the infrastructure that keeps maritime trade moving are increasingly part of the battlespace.
