Cargo vessel seized by eight armed persons off Somalia

August 19 ------ A cargo vessel was boarded and taken under control by eight armed unauthorized persons approximately 4 nautical miles south of Mareeyo, Somalia.


According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident was reported by the vessel’s Company Security Officer at 1136 UTC on August 17. The armed persons boarded the vessel and took control of the ship. Authorities are investigating the incident.


UKMTO has advised vessels operating in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.
