Butuan City records 52 degrees Celsius in heat index

June 5 ------ Warm and humid weather conditions persisted in the country, as the heat index in Butuan City reached 52 degrees Celsius around 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 4. Based on the monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), nine other stations have also recorded high heat indexes on Thursday afternoon.

It registered the highest heat indexes for the day in Dagupan City (47 degrees Celsius), Science City of Muñoz (47 degrees Celsius), Sangley Point in Cavite City (46 degrees Celsius), Ambulong, Tanauan City (45 degrees Celsius), Casiguran, Aurora (45 degrees Celsius), Davao City (45 degrees Celsius), NAIA in Pasay City (45 degrees Celsius), Roxas City (45 degrees Celsius), and Tuguegarao City (45 degrees Celsius). Meanwhile, PAGASA’s Science Garden monitoring in Quezon City registered a heat index of 42 degrees Celsius around 2 p.m.

Heat index is the measurement of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. The highest heat index so far this year was recorded in San Jose last April 20 at 58 degrees Celsius. The warm and humid weather across most parts of country can be attributed to the prevailing easterly winds originating from the Pacific, and the ridge of high pressure area extending across Northern Luzon.
