Batanes still under Signal No. 3 as 'Jenny' nears PAR exit

Metro Manila, October 5 ------ Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 is still raised over the entire province of Batanes as Typhoon Jenny (international name: Koinu) is close to exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said early Thursday morning. In a 5 a.m. briefing, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the southwest monsoon enhanced by the typhoon will continue to affect central Luzon, southern Luzon, and the Visayas even if Jenny exited PAR.

Signal No. 2 is also raised in the northern portion of Babuyan Islands, while Signal No. 1 is up over the rest of Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of mainland Cagayan, the northern portion of Apayao, and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte. Aurelio added that there are currently no other low pressure area or tropical cyclones being monitored by PAGASA inside and outside PAR. Gusty conditions may be experienced in the southern portion of Aurora, Romblon, and portions of Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Bataan, and Bicol Region on Thursday

PAGASA also warned of possible floods and landslides due to heavy rains, specifically in areas under wind signals, and those affected by the southwest monsoon being enhanced by Jenny. A gale warning remained in effect in the areas of Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and Ilocos Norte.

Jenny was last spotted 140 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes. It is forecast to move westward and exit PAR on Thursday afternoon or evening. The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph.
