February 14 ------ Bakeries have begun implementing higher prices for "Pinoy Tasty" and "Pinoy Pandesal" a week after the Department of Trade and Industry announced its new suggested retail price.
According to a report by Mariz Umali on 24 Oras, the Pinoy Tasty now costs P 40.50 from P 38.50 last week. Meanwhile, the price of Pinoy Pandesal per pack is now P 25.00, which is a price increase of P 1.50. "Raw materials increased by 25-30%. Ngayon, 'etong increase is very minimal. Kailangan na kailangan na talaga," said Christopher Ah, Executive Vice President of Filipino-Chinese Bakery Association, Inc.
But despite the new SRP, there are some bakeries that have decided to pause production of Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal due to higher production cost. "It was a very good project, but the problem is 'yung pag subsidize sa presyo nito na kung saan ito'y subsidy... Hindi ko kaya dahil ako'y maliit na bakery lang. Pansamantalang itinigil ko muna," said Chito Chavez, President of Panaderong Pilipino. The Sugar Regulatory Administration Board has approved the recommendation to import hundreds of thousands of metric tons of sugar. It is now awaiting the signature of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Bakers are hoping that the planned importation of sugar can help lower the price of bread.
