Ate Vi on National Artist award: If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be

July 25 ------ As the Star for All Seasons, Vilma Santos has long mastered the art of delivering acceptance speeches after bagging countless Best Actress awards. But as governor of Batangas, her 2026 State of the Province Address (SOPA) proved that her commanding presence extends far beyond the silver screen. To help her constituents better appreciate what her administration has accomplished so far, Ate Vi complemented her SOPA with a theatrical presentation showcasing the success of her H.E.A.R.T.S. program and the “Capitolyo on Wheels” initiative.

Just as Ate Vi has the unwavering support of her fan clubs in showbiz, she now savors the trust and admiration of Batangueños — from fishermen and farmers to teachers, hospital workers and barangay captains. Many spoke warmly of Gov. Vi in a video presentation, sharing how her programs have changed their world for the better. After decades of reaping awards for portraying memorable characters, Vilma now stands before Batangueños as herself. And judging by the reception to her SOPA, that may be her most compelling role yet.

Here’s my chat with Ate Vi:

Gov. Vilma or Ate Vi, the actress — who handles criticism better?

“When I was new in showbiz, I used to get affected by criticism. Some even made me cry. But eventually, I realized that criticism comes with the territory. As a public servant, I allow myself to learn from constructive criticism. I ignore criticism that is based on fake news on social media. I would rather let my track record speak for itself.”

What advice would Gov. Vil and Star for All Seasons Vilma give each other?

“As the Star for All Seasons, I will tell Gov. Vi that we are only as good as our last performance/project. We should not rest on our laurels and not be complacent. Never stop learning and take our job seriously. As Gov. Vi, I will tell Ate Vi, the actress, that what I’m doing now is for real people in real life. I will remind her that family must remain her priority no matter how busy we are because that’s our source of strength and inspiration.”

There are sectors clamoring that you should be named National Artist already. What are your sentiments about it?

“Being named National Artist (NA) is a prestigious recognition. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. But my world will not crumble if I’m not recognized as an NA. Life goes on. The love and support of my family, friends, fans, and constituents is more than enough blessing. After 63 years in showbiz, I have contributed a lot in my own way. In return, showbiz has given me much. So, I’m paying it forward as a public servant.”

When will you make a movie comeback?

“I hope my project with Dolly de Leon materializes. The screenplay is by Ricky Lee, no less. What a beautiful story. I look forward to portraying such a coveted role and to working with Hollywood sensation Dolly, who has made every Pinoy proud. I’m also game to work with Vice Ganda as long as the script is good and my role will be age-appropriate. So, I won’t come across as ridiculous.”
