July 17 ------ While Marco Sison — beloved for “My Love Will See You Through” and “Always” — is aware of the impact his songs have had on OPM, he prefers his interpretations of his classic hits, as he believes he is a better singer now.
“I can say that I’m lucky because my songs became classic hits,” Sison said during a media con for his upcoming “Seasons of OPM” concert. “I take care of myself. I think my voice is better now, it has a wider spectrum, and it’s higher than before. I learned a lot over the years. I think I’m a better singer now than before.”
Looking back at his years in the ‘biz, the balladeer said his success had something to do with luck. While he knows he is a talented singer, he points out that luck—along with taking care of his fans and himself—are key reasons he continues to thrive in the industry. “I really believe in luck. I consider myself lucky. You also have to take care of your fans and yourself.
For them, it’s like a relationship [that lasts] for many, many years. You keep in touch with them, and [you must have a good] attitude toward your fans,” he explained, touching on how fostering a good relationship with fans works wonders for an artist’s career. “Namamana ang relationship from the [current] and then the next generation. It’s a relationship talaga without restrictions or walang selosan,” he continued.
Purpose behind ‘Seasons of OPM’
When asked about the purpose of naming his concert “Seasons of OPM,” he explained that it covers how Filipinos are fascinated by the idea of love through generations. He hinted that aside from his classic hits, he would also perform a song by singer-songwriter Zack Tabudlo.
“Filipinos like to be in love. It is what I thought of [while conceptualizing] ‘Seasons of OPM.’ How do we sing about love through the generations? How can we describe the Filipino way of processing emotions?” he said. “It’s basically the same as today, but different. I want to show it through songs, which at the moment are not just ballads. We have different renditions of it now. And they’re good.”
The singer also expressed his joy for the current state of the local music scene. “The more, the merrier. If you ask me about the youth’s taste in music, it’s okay for me. A lot of things have changed,” Sison said, when asked about his two cents on the P-pop subgenre dominating OPM. He then stressed that the youth are also fond of singers who share the same goals as theirs. “I guess what the youth wants is a singer who has the same goal as theirs. Seeing the current state of OPM now makes me happy. There are different kinds of songs now,” he added.
But if Sison looks back at his career and reflects on what he hasn’t done, he confessed that he never had the chance to record a fast-paced song. While it is “out of character” for him to release such a song, he prefers to have a new set of hit songs instead. “Aside from recording a ‘fast song,’ I think I’ve done everything. After all, I’m thinking of my age and what would suit me,” he said. “I guess my wish is to have another set of hit songs just to switch things up. I have always performed my hit songs, if I’m not mistaken, for four decades. I’m just glad no one gets tired of it.”
