August 1 ------ JUST days after her early exit at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal, Canada, Alex Eala is now prioritizing rest and recovery. The 20-year-old Filipina has been competing non-stop around the world since the start of the 2025 tennis season.
She played on hard courts in the first quarter, shifted to clay in the middle of the year, moved to grass courts at the start of the second quarter, and returned to hard courts this month. This marks the first time this year that she will be sidelined.
Currently ranked No. 65 in the world, Eala has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, another 1000-level tournament and the last of its kind before the US Open at the end of August. The withdrawal was first reported by the WTA website early Thursday morning.
Mexico’s Renata Zarazua will take her place in the main draw. Eala has confirmed, however, that she still intends to compete in the Grand Slam in New York. She will miss the Cincinnati action, which will feature many of the world’s top players, including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Coco Gauff.
In her personal record, Eala joined a total of 17 tournaments including the Grand Slams she competed in this year.
