MANILA, Philippine, October 7 ------ Alex Eala is getting closer and closer to cracking the world’s top 50. Eala notched a new career-high ranking as she climbed to No. 54 on Monday, October 6, following deep runs in a pair of WTA 125 events in China.
The 20-year-old rose two spots from her previous career high of No. 56, which she achieved in June after she reached her first WTA final in the Eastbourne Open in the United Kingdom. Coming off her maiden WTA Challenger title in the Guadalajara Open in Mexico in September, Eala has been hard at work for the Asian swing, competing in three tournaments in a span of two weeks.
Eala made the semifinals of the Jingshan Tennis Open, where her campaign ended in a three-set loss to New Zealand’s Lulu Sun. She then survived a pair of three-set matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Suzhou Open, but the Filipina fell short of the final four after a three-set heartbreak against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic last Friday, October 5.
With no rest for the weary, Eala plunged back to action on Saturday, October 6, in the Wuhan Open, although playing a fifth straight match that went the distance seemed to have taken its toll on her as she lost to Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the qualifiers and missed out on the main draw.
From China, Eala will next compete in the Japan Open beginning on October 13.
