June 25 ------ IT took former French Open finalist Sara Errani to stop Alex Eala’s march in the WTA Challenger Veneto Open, as the Filipina exited in the quarterfinals, falling in straight sets, 0-6, 6(3)-7. Still, the quarterfinals exit is Eala's best finish in a WTA tournament.
Against the 4-seed, Eala started out flat as she was blanked in the opening set and felt her back against the wall from the get-go. The Philippines' tennis star quickly got back on her feet with a better showing in the second set, even taking a 4-3 lead, only to fall victim to Errani’s comeback.
The Italian squandered a 3-1 lead against Eala before gaining her bearings to emerge victorious in the tiebreak. Earlier this year, the 19-year-old Filipina dropped an upset ax on Errani in the opening round of the Miami Open qualifiers.
