October 7 ------ ALBERT Delos Santos set a new junior world record on the way to an eighth-place finish at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Forde, Norway.
Delos Santos, 19, lifted 185 kilograms in the clean and jerk in the 71kg men’s division in the first senior event of his career. He carried a total of 322 after lifting 137 in the snatch to top Group B of the competition. Delos Santos became the first junior world record holder since the body weight category was introduced starting on June 1, 2025 following its approval by the International Weightlifting Federation.
“Promising to get a world record makes me sound cocky, which I’m not, but that was pretty special,” Delos Santos said in an interview with IWF.net. “My big target here was making the top 10 and hitting that 185. “There’s plenty more improvement in me, and I know I need to find 15 kilos more in snatch. But things are going well. Now I have to go straight into preparing for the next big competition, the Southeast Asia Games in Thailand in two months,” said Delos Santos.
Delos Santos’ feat came after Elreen Ando bagged a bronze medal in the clean and jerk of the women’s 63kg category. Ando totaled 231 after a 100 in the snatch but finished fourth behind bronze winner Yenny Sinisterra Torres of Colombia.
