MANILA, Philippines, December 11 ------ A magnitude-5.1 earthquake, which state seismologists classified as an aftershock from the magnitude-7.4 temblor that jolted Surigao del Sur over a week ago, rocked the province yesterday morning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the aftershock occurred at 7:58 a.m., and its epicenter was located 77 kilometers east of Hinatuan town. The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Bislig.
Phivolcs said it does not expect damage from the aftershock. As of 10 a.m. yesterday, at least 4,386 aftershocks had been recorded since the magnitude-7.4 quake struck on Dec. 2. Meanwhile, the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that occurred in the same province on Dec. 4 has generated 1,983 aftershocks with intensities ranging from 1.4 to 5.8.
Earlier, Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said the aftershocks would continue for several days to weeks.
