The dry season in the Philippines falls within the months of March to May. More commonly known as summer, this is the period when people usually go to the beach or air-conditioned shopping and dining establishments to escape the heat. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, we’re advised to endure the heat in the safety of our homes.

During this season, certain diseases are more common due to rising temperatures that can reach dangerous levels. It is also ideal for pathogens to thrive and spread in such conditions. Summer sicknesses range from sore eyes to skin conditions and asthma—the list goes on. Health problems arising from these illnesses should not be ignored, nor should they prevent anyone from having a relaxing summertime.

The following are the most common illnesses that people need to watch out for and some tips for staying healthy during the summer season.


• Asthma

Allergens, such as pollution and pollen, as well as high humidity are common triggers for asthma attacks.


• Chickenpox

It is a highly contagious viral disease characterized by rashes and blisters.


• Conjunctivitis (Sore eyes)

The eyes are more prone to irritation and infection during summer due to dry air and exposure to UV rays.


• Influenza

Erratic weather during the summer months can cause fever, cough, and colds.


• Food poisoning

Food bacteria tend to multiply faster in warmer temperatures.


• Hyperthermia

It is a group of related condition that range from heat exhaustion to heatstroke caused by an overheating body.


• Measles

Children and adults can be infected when exposed to the virus.


• Mumps

It is an illness caused by a virus that targets the salivary glands.


• Rabies

The rabis virus can damage the central nervous system and lead to death if the infected person fails to get immediate treatment.


• Skin Conditions

Sunburn and heat rash are common due to frequent sun exposure.


How to stay healthy during summer:

• Always stay hydrated

A person loses more water due to the summer heat and sweating. This can lead to a wide range of health conditions.


• Avoid prolonged sun exposure

If sun exposure cannot be avoided, make sure to protect the skin at all times by using sunscreen, umbrellas, lightweight breathable clothing or top with long sleeves.


• Maintain proper hygiene

Good hygiene is an excellent defense against bacteria and viruses.


• Practice healthy eating

From having a healthy diet either through home meals, resto deliveries, or takeouts, to avoiding street food, healthy eating practices ensure that the body's nutritional needs are met.


• Get adequate rest

The body heals and recovers faster when it is well-rested.


• Keep the house and surroundings clean

This helps eliminate harmful elements like allergens and bacteria.


• Engage in light physical activity
