6.4 quake jolts Davao Oriental

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines, January 8 ------ A magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolted Manay town in Davao Oriental and nearby provinces yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 11:02 a.m., was located 47 kilometers southeast of Manay.


Allan Rommel Labayog, Phivolcs regional field monitoring officer, said the temblor may generate aftershocks and cause damage to property. The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Davao City and nearby areas. Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded in Malungon town in Sarangani.


Netizens posted on social media images showing workers in a hospital in Tagum, Davao del Norte evacuating patients during the quake. Authorities have yet to determine any injury from the temblor. In October 2025, a doublet quake with magnitudes 7.4 and 6.8 struck off the coast of Manay. The temblors raised tsunami warning for seven provinces and parts of Indonesia, left 10 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.
