5.1-magnitude earthquake strikes Batangas; felt as far as Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines, August 20 ------ A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Batangas past midnight of Wednesday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). According to Phivolcs, the epicenter of the quake was located 2 kilometers northeast of Calaca, Batangas and was recorded at exactly 12:43 a.m. The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 5 kilometers.
Phivolcs said the following intensities were reported in the following areas:
- Intensity III – Quezon City
- Intensity II – City of Makati
Instrumental intensities, meanwhile, are as follows:
- Intensity IV – Sta. Teresita, Lemery, Cuenca, Batangas; Carmona, Cavite; Muntinlupa City; Guinayangan, Quezon
- Intensity III – Bauan, Batangas City, Nasugbu, Batangas
- Intensity II – Abucay, Bataan; Mataas Na Kahoy, Batangas; Trece Martires, Naic, Ternate, Bacoor City, Cavite; San Pedro City, Laguna
Due to its strength, Phivolcs said damage caused by the quake is expected, but no aftershocks are predicted to occur. No tsunami warnings have so far been issued due to the quake.
