January 21 ------ A 23-year-old Chihuahua from Ohio just claimed the Guinness World Record for oldest living dog.
According to Guinness World Records, Spike weighs 12.9 pounds (5.85 kilograms) and is nine inches (22.86 centimeters) tall. He was found by his owner, Rita Kimball, when he was 10 years old. Rita said they found him with "blood stains around his neck from a chain or rope" and a shaved back. "The clerk in the grocery told us he had been there for three days, and they were feeding him scraps," she added. "When we left the store and entered the parking lot, he followed." "We opened the car door to put our grandson in his car seat, and Spike jumped right in and sat on the seat, as if he knew where we were going. It was meant to be."
Meanwhile, probably one of the reasons Spike reached 23 years old is his routine, which includes one morning stroll, a healthy diet, and unlimited love and attention. "I believe Spike is still here because after having such a terrible life at first, he makes the best of each day," Rita said, adding that Spike also loves chasing cats.
The Guinness World Record for oldest living dog was previously owned by 22-year-old Gino.
