MANILA, Philippines, August 1 ------ Despite the possibility of a poll postponement, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) starts today the voter registration for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE). Comelec Chairman George Garcia urged all eligible voters, especially the youth, to register in order to be able to vote on Dec. 1.
Garcia said the Comelec is expecting about a million new registrants, half of whom are young people. The registration will run until Aug. 10. As of yesterday, there was no law extending the terms of barangay and SK officials or postponing the BSKE. Earlier, the Comelec said it had been expecting President Marcos to sign into law a proposal postponing anew the conduct of the elections – a move ruled by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional.
