Researchers to develop PH-signature muscovy duck breed

May 10 ------ Brace for the development of the country’s signature muscovy duck breed. The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) has given the green light to the researchers of Ifugao State University (IFSU) to proceed with its research and development (R&D) project on muscovy duck breeding.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the IFSU’s “Development of Philippine Signature Muscovy Duck Breed” project has been approved and will be implemented starting this year. The team will be headed by IFSU R&D Director Dr. Elpidio Basilio Jr. “The project aims to boost the production of Muscovy duck by establishing a breeding true-to-type population leading to the development of Philippine signature Muscovy duck breed,” de la Peña said.

“The project also aspires to augment supply of duck meat as a substitute and support to low supply of local pork brought about by African Swine Fever (ASF),” he added. The DOST chief said the Bureau of Animal Industry – National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center (BAI-NSPRDC) will co-implement the project in Quezon province.
