Orcollo, Chua sustain rampage

MANILA, Philippines, September 17 ------ Dennis Orcollo and Johann Chua continued their unbeaten run Wednesday and moved a win shy of Last-16 spots in the US Open Pool Championship at the Hannah’s Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Orcollo overpowered former champ Corey Deuel, 11-1, then prevailed over Greek Alex Kazakis, 11-3, to get to the winners’ classification round of the double-elimination format event. Chua likewise moved forward after disposing of American Christopher Lawson, 11-5, and Lithuanian Pijus Labutis, 11-6.

Carlo Biado, Jeff de Luna and Roland Garcia, meanwhile, are continuing the hunt from the losers’ side, hoping to still make it via the backdoor. After opening the day with an 11-1 rout of former champion Mika Immonen of Finland, Biado lost to Spaniard David Alcaide, 5-11, to find himself in the losers’ bracket. De Luna and Garcia, after dropping their winners’ side Round-2 matches, stayed alive with victories over Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan (11-0) and a Polish foe, (11-5).

Four other Pinoy cue masters in Roberto Gomez, James Aranas, Jeff Ignacio and Warren Kiamco bowed out after absorbing back-to-back setbacks Wednesday. Gomez got the boot with his 10-11 defeat to Taiwanese Wu Kun Lin while Aranas crashed out with his 6-10 loss to Spaniard Jonas Comino. Ignacio and Kiamco exited after falling to Canadian John Morra (2-11) and American Skylar Woodward (9-11), respectively.
