March 10 ------ Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) 2020 has cancelled its pre-pageant activities this week due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare. “We cancelled activities for the whole week muna just for safety measures,” MUP Creative Director Jonas Gaffud said in an online interview. Gaffud said the pageant activities included seminar and charity events. The Miss Universe Philippines pageant led by its national director Shamcey Supsup-Lee would be the first national pageant to stage its grand finale on May 3 this year.
Fifty-one empowered women are vying for the title of Miss Universe Philippines 2020. When asked if there were plans to reschedule its coronation night, Gaffud said: “As of now it is still May 3.” At least four local and national pageants based in Metro Manila have either cancelled or changed dates due to rising cases of coronavirus disease in the country. Pageants that cancelled but will resume later were Miss Caloocan, Miss Parañaque, and the Mrs. Queen of Hearts Philippines 2020. The Binibining Pilipinas 2020 has been reset to May 31 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, instead of April 26.
