October 14 ------ “Beatles footage has been locked in a vault for over half a century. Unseen…until now”. Eternal fans of the Fab Four should mark it as a red-letter day in November as the week’s countdown until “The Beatles Get Back” airs for streaming. The film is “a three-part docuseries from director Peter Jackson” and will stream on Disney plus starting November 25.
The new trailer for “The Beatles Get Back” was posted on Disney plus’ official Instagram account Wednesday. The 3-minute, the 57-second trailer gives a lengthier peek into what the Peter Jackson-directed film will look like. Despite being a musical success and legendary in its own right, the original 1970 “Get Back” film directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg was a disheartening film to watch as it focused on the negative dynamics of the band that would lead eventually to the break up of The Beatles. But despite the on-film squabbling (between McCartney and Harrison) the film still managed to capture and highlight the storied rooftop concert of The Beatles. The event has become legendary for its concept (the biggest band in the world playing gung-ho concert on the rooftop and getting stopped by the police) and for the fact that it is the last known show that The Beatles have ever played together as a complete band. The Beatles won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for said film.
Meanwhile, Peter Jackson’s edit of the footage shot by Lindsay-Hogg is markedly different as it focuses on the friendship and creativity between John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Jackson worked on 57-hours’ worth of unseen and “intimate footage ever shot of the band.” Said footage of the band was originally shot in 1969 by a film crew as The Beatles worked on a new album. The premise of the 3-part film will focus on how Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr worked on the songs and music despite the time pressure of delivering a new album and under the scrutiny of a film (video) camera. The documentary will undoubtedly still culminate on the legendary rooftop concert but now with the underlying current of camaraderie and creative daring of these four lads from Liverpool, England.
“The Beatles Get Back” is produced by Peter Jackson, Clare Olssen and Jonathan Clyde. The Disney plus three-part docu series will air on Nov. 25, 26 and 27. The film is under Walt Disney Pictures, Apple Corps and Wingnut Films.
