7,186 new COVID-19 cases recorded, highest since June 13


July 28 ------ The total number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the country rose to 1,562,420 on Tuesday with 7,186 new infections, the highest daily infection recorded since June 13. According to the Department of Health (DOH), 13 laboratories failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System on time. Meanwhile, the country’s active cases also rose to 56,477.


Of this, 93.8% are mild, 1.3% are asymptomatic, 2.3% are severe, and 1.1% are in critical condition. The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,478,625 after 5,672 more patients recovered from the illness while 72 new fatalities brought the death toll to 27,318. A total of 162 duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count. “Moreover, 49 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.


Data from the DOH showed that 58% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 39% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied. In the National Capital Region (NCR), 47% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 37% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.


NCR cases up


Earlier, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said Metro Manila saw a nearly 50-percent increase in new COVID-19 cases this week compared to the week before. “Dito sa NCR, tumaas tayo ng mga 47% itong linggong ito compared doon sa nakaraang linggo (Here in the National Capital Region, our cases increased by 47% this week compared to the previous week),” he said in a Laging Handa briefing.


Duque said Metro Manila posted “a little over 900” new cases per day in the past week. The health chief urged “aggressive” case finding, testing, and contact tracing, among other efforts, to stem COVID-19 transmission.
