CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 14 (PNA) – There is big money in milk production yet the Philippines is only producing a dismal one percent of the country’s requirements, getting the huge 99 percent deficit from imports.
Danilo V. Fausto of the Dairy Confederation of the Philippines (DCP) said the dairy business is one sector that should be tapped to its full potential not only to generate jobs and help eradicate poverty but also buttress the country’s food security and nutrition program.
Businessmen engaged in the lucrative dairy industry call it “white gold” because of its vast potential.
At present the dairy industry in the Philippines is already a P65 billion business, although it is still in its infancy through the year, but the potential is great, Fausto said.
There is a need to continue educating and promoting entrepreneurship to entice Filipino companies to go into the dairy business, Fausto said at the conclusion of the 11th Dairy Congress and Expo held here recently.
This year’s theme is: “Todo Asenso, Mag Dairy Business Tayo! (There is Much Progress in the Dairy Business).
Topics included the status of the Philippine Dairy Industry, role of the government, the private sector and contributions of the United Stated Department of Agriculture in the dairy development of the country, milk quality standards and collections system, product processing and development.
One of its highlights was the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the DCP to increase dairy production and delivery to market, as well, as in local dairy supply.
Fausto also said that there is now a craving for milk, particularly fresh milk among Filipinos.
In fact, he said, “there is greater demand than supply.”
The Philippines imports most of its dairy products from Australia and New Zealand.
Fausto said the DCP will convince farmers to take a look in the dairy industry to boost livelihood, food security and improve nutrition.
Naomi K. Torreta, officer–in-charge of the National Dairy Authority (NDA) said they will establish a strong partnership with the DCP towards developing a local and vibrant dairy industry in the country and tap its full potential.
